Why Take the GRE?

The GRE is used as part of an admission packet comprised of recommendation letters, GPA, statement of purpose, GRE scores, among other factors. How each school uses the GRE score varies. STEM programs may look primarily to the quantitative score using the verbal score as a deciding feature. Some other ways schools use GRE scores include:

  • Admission decisions
  • Selection of scholarship candidates
  • Selection of fellowship candidates
  • Admission to the university in general (specific departments may not use GRE scores at all)

The best way to find out how the scores are used is to contact the person responsible for graduate admissions for your specific program.
