The Interview

If you are asked to come to an interview, the committee is evaluating you on your interests, skills, and personality and how those match the faculty. You should be prepared to answer questions about your schooling, your interests, and any research topics that you’ve been a part of or are interested in.

Some interview tips:

  • Ask what you should expect during the interview process. Different schools have different procedures and you may meet one Professor on behalf of another
  • Dress nicely (sports jackets and slacks for men and women in nice slacks, skirt, or dress)
  • Think about your goals for your school before you go in to interview
  • Research your interviewer so you can ask questions about their research or work
  • Ask questions!!! (such as hHow many students are you accepting? or hHow well equipped is the department? What type of funding is expected 2-5 years (Masters/PhD) after you begin?)
  • Write a thank-you letter to the person who interviewed you
